Only once every seven years do the Schäffler dance – and in 2026, the time has come again. The Munich Schäfflertanz 2026 is one of the most fascinating and rare cultural customs in Germany: From January 6th to February 17th, 2026, around 450 performances will fill the streets, squares, and districts of the Bavarian capital with historic craftsmanship, colorful costumes, and captivating dance figures. For cultural tourists, families, tradition enthusiasts, and anyone wanting to experience Munich in its most authentic form, this is simply a must-see event – a phenomenon that won't occur again until seven years have passed in 2033. As a hotel near Munich for the Schäfflertanz located in Oberschleißheim, we would like to introduce you to this extraordinary folk performance and provide all the important information for your visit.
What makes the Schäfflertanz 2026 so special is not just its rarity. It is the immediate experience of history, unfolding literally on the pavement in front of you. No stage curtain, no admission fee, no seating plan – just a city square, a barrel-maker dance, and hundreds of amazed Munich residents celebrating a piece of their city's identity together. This is the real Munich, something you cannot buy. And because the approximately 450 performances are spread across the entire city area and run from January to mid-February, a multi-day stay is highly recommended. From our Hotel am Schlosspark in Oberschleißheim, you can reach Marienplatz – the main venue for the Schäfflertanz – in about 25 minutes by S-Bahn (public transport).
A practical note in advance: In February 2026, the Munich Security Conference will take place during the Schäfflertanz season – one of the most important political meetings in the world, which regularly books out hotels in the Munich city center and drives up prices. If you want to come to Munich for the Schäfflertanz, you should secure your accommodation for the Schäfflertanz 2026 as early as possible. Since the event only takes place every seven years, demand for suitable overnight options is historically enormous.
To truly understand the Munich Schäfflertanz, one must view it in its historical context. Legend has it that the Munich Schäffler – the barrel makers – first danced in 1517 to entice the plague-stricken population of Munich back onto the streets, bringing back courage and joy. The plague had devastated the city, and many people were afraid to leave their homes. The Schäffler danced through the streets, demonstrating that life goes on. Since then, this dance has been a tradition – and the seven-year rhythm has been maintained to this day.
The Fachverein der Schäffler Münchens maintains this heritage with great dedication. The association today consists of active dancers, craftsmen, and guardians of tradition who preserve and pass on the Schäfflertanz in its original form. The costumes, music, and individual dance figures follow a handed-down set of rules that has barely changed over centuries – a living connection to Munich's city history.
Anyone attending a Schäfflertanz performance will quickly recognize the recurring elements. Every figure has a fixed place in the choreography:
