The history of the Schleißheim airfield began in 1912 with the Bavarian flying squadron that was set up here. It is one of the oldest airfields ever. Some of its facilities date back to the earliest years of flying.

After World War 1 Schleißheim became the centre of the emergent air traffic industry, then a training centre for the German Commercial Aviation School and finally an air base for the German Air Force.

After World War 2 the airfield was occupied initially by American, later German army pilots and finally a flight squadron of the Federal Border Guards together with several aviation clubs.

When the airfield was abandoned the historical building became increasingly derelict. The German Museum took over the building and following its restoration a large glass hanger was added to the historical factory, making it today a branch of the German Museum.
