| 1701
Prince Elector Max Emanuel had the new castle built as a future
residence with reference to the size of the castles in Vienna and
Versailles and with a view to the expected imperial dignity. Building
began in 1701-1704 according to plans from Enrico Zuccalli and largely
completed under Jospeh Effner in 1719-26 after an interruption of
many years. Famous artists such as Johann Baptist Zimmermann, Cosmas
Damian Asam and Jacopo Amigoni were involved in the sumptuous furnishings.
When Max Emanuel was not crowned emperor the residence was not shifted
from Munich to Schleißheim.
From 1715
After his return from exile in France, the Prince Elector Max Emanuel
commissioned the French landscape gardener Dominique Girard to design
the garden parterre and modernise the ornamental shrubbery bed.
The side canals with the linden avenue had been built beforehand.
Despite various interventions in the 19th century, The Schleißheim
Castle Park is one of the few Baroque parks in Germany that has
remained virtually unchanged in its basic layout. |
